The Wando girls varsity tennis team ended its regular season with a dominating 6-0 victory over Bishop England at home on Thursday, extending its winning streak to 16 heading into the playoffs. The Warriors (16-2) are expected to be the #1 Lower State seed when the Class AAAAA bracket is released this weekend. Bishop England (5-6), ranked #8 by MaxPreps in Class AAA coming into the match, is vying for a top 4 Lower State seeding in the Class AAA playoffs. Both teams entered Thursday’s meeting at less than full strength. Wando was without its regular #2 starter while Bishop England was missing its regular #3. Had the players been there, the outcome probably would have been the same. Wando won every match in straight sets and gave up just 17 total games out of the 89 games played. The whole match took about 90 minutes. Singles winners were Ellie Frank, Kinsley Matthews, Caroline Greene, Mary Alice Collins and Lilly Biggs. Tucker Adams and Mae Keegan won at doubles. Wando is expected to get a first-round bye in the playoffs, which means its next match likely won’t be until Oct. 27th. ***** WANDO 6, BISHOP ENGLAND 0 Singles: Ellie Frank def. MONCKS CORNER -- Sophomore Lilly Biggs survived a match point in her epic singles contest on Wednesday en route to winning the deciding tiebreaker 12-10, lifting the Wando girls varsity tennis team to a 4-2 victory over Berkeley. Had Biggs lost her match after nearly three hours on the court, the teams would have had to play #1 doubles to decide the outcome. Wando’s Kinsley Matthews and Caroline Greene warmed up just in case. But their services ultimately weren’t needed as the Warriors secured their 15th straight victory to improve to 15-2 overall, including a perfect 10-0 mark in Region 6-AAAAA. Berkeley, an experienced team with 11 seniors on its roster, fell to 16-4 overall and 6-4 in the region (3rd place). The Warriors won despite playing without four of their top five players who were out for various reasons. The team should be at near full strength for its final regular season match on Thursday -- a home contest against Bishop England. Against Berkeley on an unusually hot late-October afternoon, Matthews at #1, Greene at #2 and Brigitta Ohannessian at #3 all won their singles matches handily to give Wando a 3-0 lead. But after losses at #3 singles and #2 doubles, all eyes turned Biggs’ match on the #4 court. Biggs won her first set 6-4 but couldn’t match the consistency of her steady opponent in the second, losing 6-2. She jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the deciding tiebreaker but again saw her opponent mount a comeback and even faced a match point at 8-9. Yet the crafty right-hander survived the moment when her opponent netted a forehand. After switching ends and with dozens of players and parents looking on, Biggs made good on her second match point opportunity when her opponent’s forehand sailed long. Thursday’s Bishop England match is Wando’s final contest of the regular season. The playoffs start next week, but the Warriors are expected to get a bye that will move their first playoff match to Oct. 27th. ...

Boys Tennis 2027 Tryouts Start Feb. 1 Tryout week for the 2027 Boys Tennis season -- varsity and JV -- will be Feb. 1-4 from 4-6 p.m. with Feb. 5th as a possible weather makeup day. Other important reminders: NEW REGISTRATION WEBSITE: Wando has scrapped the old “Big Teams/Planet High School” website and switched over to “Arbiter” to register athletes. Only athletes cleared on Arbiter will be eligible to play. Here is the all-important registration link: https://students.arbitersports.com/programs/wando-high-school-athletic-form-requirements-26-27 HEALTH PHYSICALS: Only physicals that were conducted AFTER April 1, 2026, will be considered valid. Players can get inexpensive physicals at any of the standalone walk-in clinics or urgent care centers in our area. REGISTER ASAP: The process for Wando administrators to view and approve documents is very tedious. Please don’t wait until late January to start or you risk missing tryouts. SPORTSYOU: Coach Lang uses SportsYou as his primary way to communicate with the team. The join code is SQ365ZJ8. Make sure parents sign up as a "Family" member and players sign up as a "Player." Also, please get the app for your phone and turn on notifications. FALL/WINTER CHALLENGE: Coach Lang is challenging all prospective team members to play regularly in this period leading up to tryouts -- at least 2-3 times a week to stay in tennis shape and mentally sharp. They should mix in lots of sets and tiebreakers, teaching themselves different ways to win. Competition is key. They shouldn't just be hitting or drilling but playing points. Winning is a mindset. They should get accustomed to it. It should be second nature, an expectation. Contact Coach Lang with any questions at [email protected]. GO WANDO! ...
