Despite waiting 12 days to play its first playoff match, the top-seeded Wando girls varsity tennis team showed little rust in a 6-0 demolition of eighth-seeded Blythewood on Tuesday.
The Warriors, 17-2 and winners of 17 in a row, won in a little over two hours and gave up just seven total games to the visiting Bengals, who saw their season end at 10-7.
Wando will host fourth-seeded Carolina Forest on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the 5A Lower State semifinals. Carolina Forest (12-3) easily defeated Spring Valley 5-1 at home on Thursday.
Under a cloudless sky and temperatures in the low 70s on Tuesday, Wando and Blythewood couldn’t have asked for better playing conditions.
Wando fielded one of its youngest singles lineups of the season with three eighth graders, a freshman and a sophomore in the starting five. All jumped out to early leads and never looked back. Singles winners were Cyanna Enright, Kinsley Matthews, Tucker Adams, Caroline Greene and Mary Alice Collins.
Doubles was delayed about an hour but still finished at about the time the longest singles match ended. Mae Keegan and Brigitta Ohannesian gave up just one game.
Thursday’s match against fellow Region 6 member Carolina Forest will be the third meeting of the season. Wando won the first two by scores of 4-2 and 6-0.
